Making Your Materials Workshop

The Wild and Ancient Art Kit

Saturday, October 19th & Sunday, October 20th, 10am – 4pm daily, with a break for lunch.

We’ll be traveling through the ages on this two day course that will send you away with homemade sketchbooks, drawing materials, paints, inks, pens and brushes all made from abundant natural materials or by repurposing so-called waste. You’ll also learn how to make good quality art materials in almost any surroundings and how to tailor them to your own art practice needs.

Suitable for beginners to advanced, all are welcome. 16+ yrs preferred, exceptions may be made for children 12+ with material experience and interest, if they register with a parent or guardian.

Attendees are recommended to pack a lunch. Coffee & tea will be available at the commons. A full kitchen is available for reheating or food prep.

Tuition:

This course is being offered at sliding scale: $150-$400 for the 2 full days. Suggested ‘tiers’ for pricing are;

• $150 for those in real economic need.

• $300 for those able to afford the true cost of the workshop, and more accurately reflects the value of Caro’s skill and time.

• $400 for those able to invest in their community— the extra tuition will go to subsidize scholarships and tuition for others. Thank you for being generous if you have the resources to do so!

Scholarships:

One full scholarship is available, funded by In Situ Polyculture. All scholarship applications will be considered after the deadline of 9/20, and applicants will be notified soon after!

Class location & accommodations:

Movement for Connection will take place at In Situ Polyculture Commons, just outside of Saxtons River, VT in Westminster, VT on Hartley Hill. Address will be sent to registrants.

When you register, you will have the chance to select

“Local Registrant” if you live nearby Westminster, VT and will be commuting from home for the class each day.

“Traveling from Afar” is the second option, which will allow you to indicate interest in staying on-site for camping (limited to 2 attendees) or staying in the In Situ Polyculture Yurt (1-2 attendees max), or whether you need some recommendations for local inns. There is a nice, affordable inn in Saxtons River, VT and a wonderful bed and breakfast in nearby Bellows Falls, VT that we can recommend!

Registration opening soon.

Limited to 14 people. Registration will remain open and accepting applicants until the course is full, at which point we will switch to a waitlist. We recommend registering soon if you know you are interested, as Caro’s courses are popular!

About Caroline Ross

She lives and works in Bournemouth, Dorset, UK, making drawings and paintings from wild and ancient materials, from small illustrations to large murals. She has taught life drawing as well as painting, and currently teaches people how to make the materials she uses in her studio, online and as a guest at centres across Europe, the US and the UK. She also teaches at Dartington both on her own unique course ‘Found and Ground art materials’, and with the Dark Mountain Project, online and in person at Schumacher College. Having spent decades indoors in art and recording studios, she now spends her life outdoors as much as possible, sourcing her materials, making her work, and immersing herself in nature.
